The Wildcats have 19 varsity teams that participate in the Mideastern Conference. The school was founded in 1898. Notable alumni: Roman Gabriel, former NFL quarterback and MVP; Sonny Jergensen, NFL Hall of Fame; Clyde Simmons, retired NFL pro bowler; Kenny Gattison, retired NBA player; Trot Nixon, retired MLB player. Fomrer football coach Leon Brogden, who coached both Roman Gabriel and Sonny Jurgenson while at New Hanover, was inducted into the NCHSAA Hall of Fame in 1987.
