Chris Haney was approved Monday night by the Columbus County Board of Education to take over as East Columbus High School head football coach, starting immediately.
Haney replaces Toby Kasell, who stepped down in June to become football coach at Leland Middle School to be closer to home.
Haney has less than a week with the players before the start of practice on Aug. 1, and he said he is going to dive in “head first.”
“We are going to be throwing a lot at them,” Haney said. “The stuff we are doing is not difficult. Football is pretty simplistic. We make it too difficult sometimes.”
Haney met with the players briefly last week. The few times he has seen them working, he said they are catching on fast.
“They’re smart kids, so I really have no worries,” he said. “We don’t play until late August.”
Haney will be bringing along with him David Schmick. The pair worked as assistant coaches together first at Ashley High School, under head coach Jason Tindal, and most recently at New Hanover High School under Kevin Motsinger.
This is Haney’s first head coaching job, and he said he’s excited about the opportunity.
“Is it the first step of something better, or is it the place I retire? No one really knows,” Haney said. “I’ve heard a ton of great things about the kids and the area, so I’m looking forward to it – starting chapter one of my head coaching career.”
