The Bulldogs battled back from seven down at the half to force overtime but fell short in the end.

“They had some big guys with long arms and they shot the ball extremely well. I am impressed that we fought back and stayed close,” said Wallace coach Stave Robinson.

Marquel Newkirk led the Bulldogs with 23 points.

With the loss in  the second round of the 1A playoffs, Wallace-Rose Hill’s  (20-8) season comes to an end.

Girls Basketball

The Tigers made some key free throws to move into the third round of the playoffs.

“We played an awesome game. It was a good game from start to finish. Goldsboro was within one with a minute left and our point guard,  Desiree Phillips got fouled twice, knocked down four field goals and gave us the win,” said James Kenan coach Wendy Lanier.  

James Kenan plays Lejuene on Friday.

The Trojans scored nine runs in the fourth inning and were led by Kimberly Cook, who gave up two hits and shut out the Wildcats.

West Brunswick (1-0) plays Laney on Friday.

The Cougars picked up two runs in the sixth to give them the edge over the Buccaneers.

Becca Montgomery went 3-3 to lead Laney.

South Brunswick (0-1) plays New Hanover (0-1) on Friday.

The Vikings got an impressive performance from Bryan Sammons to open thier season.

Sammons pitched a complete-game one-hitter and  struck out 14.

Ashley won its home opener by scoring 11 runs on one hit and Eric Eason gave up three runs on four hits.

Pat Regan led the way for the Hurricanes with 10 goals and Brian Plazzo added 14 saves.

Cape Fear Academy (1-0) plays at Chapel Hill on Friday and New Hanover (0-1) plays Charlotte Catholic on Friday.

 Anna Zanelli  led the Buccaneers with two goals and  Jillian Born added two assists.

Lexi Herring scored the Wildcats’ only goal and Lauren Mumford added an assist.
