The Bulldogs jumped out to a 19-11 lead in the first quarter and held on to win the Tri-County Conference tournament.

“We played our best game tonight, played hard on defense in the second half and  kept their point guard scoreless,” said Wallace coach Steve Robinson. “Marquel Newkirk came up big for us.”  

Newkirk led the Bulldogs with 21 points.

Desire Phillips led the way for the Tigers with 16 points as they lost in the championship game of the Tri-County tournament and dropped another close game to Lakewood.

“We played very good in the first half, but in the second our intensity was down. We led by as much as 12 points and Lakewood just made some great plays,” said James Kenan coach Wendy Lanier.

4A East Regional

1st Round


New Hanover County  had a strong showing in the opening day of regionals.

Laney has five in the  semifinals, Hoggard has four and Ashley has one.

Adam Hardy (113 pounds), Jon Miller (126), Russell Harrison (132), Marcel Burns (170) and Brian Capps (195) move on for the Buccaneers. David Wilson (126), Daniel Wilson (132), Phillipe Frederick (138) and Malik Moore move on for Hoggard. Victor Sosa is the lone Screaming Eagle in the semifinals.



1A East Regional

1st Round


Trask performed well in the first round with wins by Samuel Chavez-Lopez (120), Pedro Lopez (132) and Jevron Faison (285). Chavez -Lopez and Lopez lost in the second round and Faison moved into the semifinal round.



2A East Regional

1st Round


Two Topsail No. 10 seeds picked up wins. Catherine Herring (106) and Taylor Webster (120) both knocked off seven seeds. Herring and Webster then fell in the second round. Robert Sculthorpe (160), Eric Thigpen (170), Matt Schaefer (182) and Joseph Sculthorpe (220) moved on to the semifinals for the Pirates.
