Swimmers qualify for state meet

4A East regional

Travis Johns and Christian Caveness took home a pair of individual wins from the 4A East regional swim meet in Cary on Saturday, while Hoggard swimmers qualified for the state championship meet in 11 events.

Johns, the defending state champion in the boys 200-yard individual medley, took second in the event on Saturday despite dropping four seconds off his seed time. Johns will get another shot at the state meet next weekend. Johns also won the boys 100-yard backstroke with a time of 51.96.

His teammate, Christian Caveness, won the boys 100 butterfly with a 50.93 time, dropping 11/2 seconds off his seed time. Laney also qualified for the state meet in the boys 200 medley relay and the boys 400 freestyle relay. Those finishes combined to lead Laney to a 10th-place overall finish as a boys team.

Hoggard continued its strong swimming, especially in the relay events, finishing sixth as a team in the girls meet and ninth in the boys. The Vikings qualified four relay teams for the state meet: girls and boys 200 medley relays, the boys 400 freestyle relay and the girls 200 freestyle relay.

"We are ecstatic," Hoggard coach Tammy Pruden said. "They put their game face on. We talked about that: ‘Don't settle. It's great that you got here, but push through.' "

Caroline Estep led the Hoggard girls – also the 13-time defending Mideastern Conference champions – by finishing second in the girls 100 free with a time of 52.59 and third in the girls 50 freestyle with a time of 24.26.

"I think that she has as good a chance as anybody (for a state championship)," Pruden said. "On those sprints, I don't know you can count anybody out when you're in the top eight."

Hoggard's Zach Hannum also qualified for the state meet in both boys sprint freestyle events, taking seventh in the 50 freestyle and third in the 100 freestyle with a time of 48.34.
