A balanced offensive attack and stifling defense helped the Coastal Christian Centurions defeat Wilmington Christian Academy in 49-22 in girls' basketball action Monday night.
The win was a historic one for Coastal, as it marks their first victory in Wilmington Christian's gym.
Throughout much of the game, Wilmington Christian was unable to figure out the Centurions' full court press, leading to turnovers and easy baskets for Coastal.
"We really wanted to be committed to our pressure," said head coach Mike Scheffel, whose team is now 10-7 on the year. "We picked up full court and made them uncomfortable. Overall, eventually, the pressure just really got to them."
Behind that pressure, Coastal Christian took a 31-11 lead into halftime, and would extend their lead to as much as 32 in the second half before calling off the dogs at the start of the fourth quarter.
The Centurions were led by junior guard Lauren Duncan, who finished the game with 18 points. Madison Huckabee added 10, while three other chipped in eight.
Duncan has been one of the stars of Coastal Christian's team this season, averaging 13.9 points per game and 4.8 rebounds per game coming into Monday night.
"We're a pretty young team, and we've come a long way from last year," said Duncan. "I knew that if we just worked hard, even though we didn't have the season we wanted last year that we could grow and develop as a team, and have some fun doing it too."
It's been a hold and cold type season for the Centurions, who were coming off a 36-21 loss to Carolina Friends last Saturday. But perhaps this win could set them up for a late season run as they will host Trinity Christian Friday night.
"We've got some great games ahead," said Scheffel.
In the second half of the doubleheader, Coastal Christian held on to secure a 49-37 win over Wilmington Christian Academy. The win moves the Centurions to 6-11 on the year, while the Patriots fall to 7-9.
Nick Chase led all scorers will 21 points, while Jonah Attoe led the Patriots with seven points.
