Girls Basketball
Ashley 41, New Hanover 30
Ashley used a pair of big runs to outpace New Han-over en route to a 41-30 win Friday.
New Hanover led 11-8 early in the second quarter, but Ashley buckled down defensively, forced turnovers and sparked a 14-0 run. When New Hanover closed the gap to two points in the third quarter, Ashley responded with an 8-0 run to close the quarter and keep the Wildcats at bay.
"That was the game," Ashley coach Adrienne Gale said. "We made some big defensive stops and defensive intensity rose, and we capitalized too. That was very important to get those runs in the second and third quarter."
Ashley's defense was pivotal, but the Screaming Eagles also got 20 points from Felicity Havens to grease the offensive skids. Kapria Pressley paced New Hanover with 13 points.
Hoggard 57, New Bern 45
Julia Buhler led the way with 24 points as the Vikings built a six-point halftime lead and outscored New Bern 31-25 in the second half.
Hoggard (6-7, 1-1) plays Greenville Rose on Friday.

Wilmington Christian 28
Jensen Attoe scored more than half the Patriots' points with 18.
Wilmington Christian Academy (2-10) plays at Coastal Christian on Monday.

The Wolfpack prevailed in a battle of unbeaten conference teams.
Jenna Watts led the way for the Wolfpack with nine points. Asha Graham scored 12 for the Eagles.
East Bladen (12-3, 3-1) plays at North Brunswick on Friday. Whiteville (8-6,3-0) plays South Columbus on Friday.

Salem Baptist 31
The Centurions came out on fire and went on a 38-12 run in the first half.
Lauren Duncan and Nicki Huntley led the way with 19 points each. Huntley added 11 rebounds, three 3-pointers and three assists.
Coastal Christian (9-6) plays at Carolina Friends at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Laney 50, Rose 15
The Buccaneers, led by Brianna Baham and Tiana Edwards, continue to look impressive. They opened the first quarter on a 16-1 run and never let up.
Baham scored 15 points and Edwards added 13.
Laney (11-1, 2-0) plays at New Hanover on Friday.
Boys Basketball
Union 65, Trask 63
The Titans struggled in the first quarter and then bounced back in the second to come within two at the half, but that was as close they would get to Union all night.
Trask's Rahseed Brown led all scorers with 25.
Trask (4-10, 0-5) plays James Kenan on Friday.
O'Neal School 50
Cape Fear Academy 43
The Hurricanes led by four after the first quarter, then O'Neal School went on a 14-4 run in the second quarter to take a six-point lead at the half.
Gene Middleton led the Hurricanes with 14 points.
Cape Fear Academy (5-10) plays Village Christian on Tuesday.

Nick Chase led the way with 18 points and Wesley Age added 11.

The Vikings jumped out to a 38-19 lead at the half and then outscored New Bern 31-29 in the second half.
Trevor Singleton led the way with 26 points and Joe O'Donnell added 18.
