Trevon Brown’s steal with 41 seconds left ensured New Hanover’s narrow win against Ashbrook and gave the Wildcats a third-place finish.
With the Wildcats nursing a one-point lead and Ashbrook with the ball, Brown tipped the ball away and took off down the court, drawing an intentional foul. Those two free throws and the ensuing possession gave the Wildcats a necessary cushion against a scrappy Ashbrook team.
“He’s a senior,” New Hanover coach Kirk Angel said. “He’s been to three regionals and won a state championship. He knows he’s got to make that play.”
Brown added 25 points, 14 of them in the second half as New Hanover went on a 12-0 run in the third quarter to take the lead. Brown also had four assists, most of them to Nigel Holley, who added 16 points and 13 rebounds.
