Laney soccer loses

The Laney Buccaneers boys' soccer team gave up the game-winning goal with a minute left to play against host Pinecrest in the third round of the 4A state playoffs.

"It was a bittersweet way to end a great season," Laney coach Jamie Noble said. "We played great this year, and outplayed them tonight. They scored a questionable goal. The ball looked like it was out of bounds before it went in. But that's how soccer is. Sometimes it's not fair."

Topsail soccer loses on PKs

The Topsail Pirates' boys soccer season came to an end with a penalty-kick loss to Siler City-Jordan Matthews in the third round of the 2A state playoffs.

Sammy Johnson and Taylor Webster scored goals in regulation for the Pirates.

Neither team could break the 2-2 tie in overtime, but the Jets prevailed on penalty kicks.

IN OTHER HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS | Trask softball coach Ron Watson resigned Wednesday. According to an email from athletic director Ed Gilroy, Watson had to step down because of health issues. … Harrells Christian volleyball player Regan Murphy and football player Russell Washington will play in the annual NCISAA East/West all-star games this season for the Crusaders. The volleyball game is Saturday at Charlotte Latin, while the football contest is Nov. 25
